The Natural Sciences Building at Mangosuthu University of Technology was designed as a contemporary teaching and research facility that responds to its subtropical climate while significantly reducing operational energy demand. The project prioritised passive environmental design to create a comfortable, efficient academic environment with minimal reliance on mechanical cooling.

The key challenge was balancing the environmental demands of a science building with effective control of heat gain, natural ventilation, and daylight within a dense campus setting. The building also needed to accommodate high internal heat loads while maintaining thermal comfort and reducing long-term energy consumption.

The design employs careful orientation, building form, and façade design to optimise environmental performance. Shaded windows, light shelves, and automated high-level glass louvres maximise natural daylight and ventilation while limiting glare and solar gain. Deep concrete soffits absorb heat during the day and release it through night flushing, while a green roof provides additional insulation. These passive systems are coordinated through an automated environmental control strategy operating throughout the daily cycle.

The completed building achieved energy savings of approximately 50–60% while providing a naturally lit, thermally comfortable, and environmentally responsive learning environment.
